In the Western World Ruth's family started in St Croix, V.I
St. Croix was conquered and owned by the French, the Dutch then the Danish. Three islands were given to the princes of Denmark (St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John). The Danish sold it to the USA in 1916 for $125 million dollars. The first few generations of the family spoke Dutch.
